What is a Bank Holiday?

Bank holidays are public holidays.  The first offical bank holidays were named in the Bank Holidays Act of 1871.  The term bank holiday is generally used for any public holiday, even if they are not actually bank holidays (e.g. Good Friday and Christmas Day).

There is no automatic right to time off from work on bank holidays, but a majority of people will be given time off work or extra pay for working them.  This is obviously dependent upon their work contract.
